Dear Tsai Hsin Han,
Welcome to our Principles of Macroeconomics course. It is my great privilege to be your instructor. I look forward to engaging with you over the next eight weeks around some of the key topics in macroeconomics and to guide you as you begin to learn some of the fundamentals of this most important subject.
As the name suggests, macroeconomics is the study of “big” economic issues. Not surprisingly, these issues are complex. Indeed these are the issues that go right to the heart of people’s material well-being, their ability to secure employment, and to grow the economy so that future generations enjoy higher prosperity than was possible in the past. We will also deal explicitly with questions of government involvement in the economy, and of what intellectual ideas have led governments to become actively involved in macroeconomic management and what some of the consequences of this might be.
The course is designed around the video lectures. It is very important that you keep up with the schedule of lectures. Each lecture covers a key topic in macroeconomics though some of the topics require more than one lecture. In addition there are weekly study guides, discussion forums, extra resources, quizzes and a range of material designed to give you what I hope will be a rewarding learning experience. All of this is explained in more detail in the “How to study in this course” section of our Coursera homepage and I encourage you to look at that before you begin your program of study.
Please also take time to read the Syllabus. There is important information there about the topics we will cover and the assessment tasks that will need to be completed.
There are a variety of forums you can also participate in and these are available through our Coursera home page. The forums will provide you with opportunities to ask questions, discuss the material, share information, provide feedback on the course and communicate with me. I will read (and sometimes participate) in these discussions with interest.
The course is designed to be self-contained. There is no set textbook. Should you wish to consult a text, any introductory book on macroeconomics will cover most of the material although, of course, the mode of presentation and emphasis might differ. Nonetheless, the key concepts should be similar to those we cover in the course.
The course is open now. I am excited about the opportunity I have been given to present the Principles of Macroeconomic to you. I look forward to sharing the wonderful insights that macroeconomics brings to a range of important issues.
I wish you every success.
